Custom tuning string gauge calculator

Tune first. Let the gauges follow.

Set the scale length, choose notes for each string, hear the pitches, and see a practical gauge estimate.

1

Scale length

Choose the vibrating string length.

How to measure

Measure from the nut to the 12th fret, then double it. If you know the exact nut-to-saddle length, use that.

Multiscale or fanned fret?

Use an average scale length for now. Per-string scale lengths are coming.

Strings

Add or remove rows. Six is the default.

Quick starts

Use A-G plus an octave, with optional # or b: E2, F#3, Bb4. Pasted notes fill the rows from ceiling to floor.

Why this exists

Use this when a tuning changes pitch enough that normal string sets feel too loose, too stiff, or uneven.

How it works

The calculator converts each note to frequency, uses scale length and string unit weight to estimate pounds of tension, then chooses the closest available gauge for the selected material and target tension. Change a gauge and the tension updates.

Plain strings

The material picker changes wound rows only. Plain rows remain steel, no matter which acoustic family you select.
